| Résumé : |
In the current global trend toward natural antioxidants, Origanum floribundum Munby, an endemic plant from northern Algeria, emerges as a promising candidate due to its traditional medicinal uses. The objective of this study is to highlight its value by evaluating its phytochemical composition and antioxidant activity. Phytochemical screening revealed a strong presence of flavonoids, coumarins, and alkaloids, suggesting interesting biological properties. Two types of extracts were obtained: a crude hydroethanolic extract (yield: 15.03%) and an essential oil by hydrodistillation (yield: 0.3%). Total polyphenol content was remarkably high (3791.61 mg GAE/g), prompting further antioxidant activity analysis. Antioxidant potential was assessed via the DPPH method, comparing the extract and essential oil to ascorbic acid. Results showed that essential oil had stronger antioxidant activity, likely due to its richness in thymol and carvacrol. These findings confirm the therapeutic potential of O. floribundum and encourage its application in herbal medicine, food preservation, and natural cosmetics.
Analysis carried out by chromatography in gas phase coupled with mass spectroscopy (CG/MS) EO obtained by hydrodistillation identified components. The CG/MS revealed that the major constituent is gamma-Terpinene 28.08%.
