This study focuses on the analysis of morphometric indices and growth patterns of the edible sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus along the coast of Tipaza, Algeria. The main objective was to assess morphological variations between different coastal stations and estimate the age of sea urchins using growth striae. The results revealed significant differences in morphometric parameters (weight, spine length, test dimensions) among the five studied stations, highlighting the influence of environmental conditions on growth and population dynamics.
Samples were collected from five distinct stations: Cherchell, Sidi Ghiles, Hadjret Enous, Messelmoun, and Larhat. Analyses showed that sea urchins from stations located far from urban areas or residential complexes (based on my observations), such as Cherchell and Messelmoun, exhibited greater growth and a higher average age. In contrast, stations closer to urban areas or residential complexes (based on my observations), like Hadjret Enous, displayed smaller and younger individuals. The study also revealed geometric variations among populations, suggesting local adaptation to environmental conditions.
These findings underscore the importance of sustainable management of sea urchin populations, particularly in the face of overfishing and environmental pressures. The methods employed, such as geometric morphometrics and growth striae analysis, provide valuable tools for monitoring and conserving this keystone species in Mediterranean marine ecosystems.
