| Résumé : |
The aim of this study was to assess microplastic contamination in beach sands in Bou-Ismail Bay (Algeria). Three beaches were sampled: Chenoua, Sidi Boumaeza and Colonel Abbas. Analyses were carried out in two seasons, winter (December 2024) and summer (April 2025), using the IAEA RAF1010 protocol, combining density separation, oxidative digestion, microscopic counting and polymer identification by FTIR spectroscopy. The results reveal the presence of microplastic contamination at all three beaches, with an average abundance in the order of The Chenoua beach has the highest values, with up to 1,426 MPs/m² (34,506 MPs/kg) in the cold season. However, the beaches of Sidi Boumaeza and Colonel Abbas show lower but significant levels, reaching 690 MPs/m² (13,610 MPs/kg) and 499 MPs/m² (1,434 MPs/kg) respectively. The polymers identified include PAN, PET, PS, PP, PU, as well as uncharacterized fragments. The co-occurrence of primary and secondary microplastics suggests multiple sources and active degradation. |
